Charlotte, NC

Ann Wright former US Army Colonel, state department employee and peace activist, grew up in Arkansas and has her master's and law degrees from the University of Arkansas. She also has a master's degree in national security affairs from the U.S. Naval War College. Col. Wright spent thirteen years in the U.S. Army and sixteen additional years in the Army Reserves, retiring as a Colonel.

In 1987, Col. Wright joined the Foreign Service and served as U.S. Deputy Ambassador in Sierra Leone, Micronesia, Afghanistan, and Mongolia. She received the State Department's Award for Heroism for her actions during the evacuation of 2,500 people from the civil war in Sierra Leone. She was on the first State Department team to go to Afghanistan and helped reopen the embassy there in December, 2001. Her other overseas assignments include Somalia, Kyrgyzstan, Grenada, Micronesia, and Nicaragua. On March 19, 2003, the eve of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, Ann Wright cabled a letter of resignation to Secretary of State Colin Powell, stating that without the authorization of the UN Security Council, the invasion and occupation of a Muslim, Arab, oil-rich country would be a disaster. Since then, she has been writing and speaking out for peace. She fasted for a month, picketed at Guantanamo, served as a juror on an international impeachment commission, and has been arrested numerous times for peaceful, nonviolent protest of Bush's policies, particularly the war in Iraq. She is the author of Dissent, Voices of Conscience, which chronicles the experiences of those who opposed the war within the military, the state department, and the international community. She lives in Hawaii.

The event is co-sponsored by the Piedmont Unitarian-Universalist Peace Alliance and the Piedmont Unitarian-Universalist Social Justice Committee. There is no admission charge.

IMMEDIATE MORATORIUM ON FORECLOSURES AND EVICTIONS, NOW!

The same institutions that profit from endless war are now demanding that the entire U.S. Treasury to be placed at their disposal to bailout corrupt banks and mortgage institutions, a declaration of endless war against people at home. Even mainstream media is describing this as the "financial equivalent of the Patriot Act," which will give the banks and their politicians in Washington a license to seize billions of dollars for the benefit of Wall Street bankers.

Many have speculated that the Bush Administration might launch an "October Surprise" - and it has. This is an outright declaration of war against working people. We're told there's no money for health care, education, infrastructure – but in one swoop – $1 trillion has been found to prop up banks and financial institutions. This money has been stolen from working people, who will face massive cuts in every social program.

Saturday's Day of Action was originally called by the Stop War on Iran Campaign to protest the Bush Administration's drive to war against Iran, and the demand "Stop War On Iran" will remain a central theme of the demonstration. In light of recent developments - Washington's declaration of war against working people in order to fund an unprecedented trillion dollar bailout of Wall Street bankers - anti-war activists need to address the latest phase of the war - the war against working people here.

No Corporate Bailout! - We need immediate moratorium on foreclosures. We need health care, education and housing.

US Troops Deployed In Southern RP (Philippines) Due For Rotation

The Mindanao Examiner, Sept. 22, 2008

"It's same process with AFP tour of duty" — WesMinCom chief

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines - The United States armed forces being temporarily deployed to southern Philippines are due for rotation for the next two to three weeks.

This is the statement of Marine Lt. Gen. Nelson Allaga, chief of the Western Mindanao Command, in a phone interview. Allaga stressed that "the US forces are here on a temporary basis, and upon invitation of the Philippine Government."

"There really is nothing suspicious about it. It is a simple turn-over of personnel who have been on tour of duty here in the Philippines for a short time, and for personnel who will be on tour of duty also for a short period," the 3-star Marine general said. "It's the same process with the AFP, actually, and is just a normal replacement of troops."

The WesMinCom commander, who is now in the country's capital region, shared that he was called to appear before the Senate by Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago.

Allaga said Task Force Comet chief Marine Maj. Gen. Juancho Sabban has already sent him facsimiles of resolutions from some Jolo-based groups resisting the presence of US forces in Sulu province.

"The issue here is transparency, and the US military has been transparent in their assistance and support not only to the AFP but even to the PNP," he said.

The WesMinCom chief the cited the training conducted by the US military for the Philippine National Police forces twice in Jolo, and once in Zamboanga City for the entire Police Regional Office 9.

"We soldiers and policemen are benefiting from the trainings that the JSOTFP is conducting for us. We do projects for communities together, and in some places, there are many civilians helping us out. In fact, there are more supporters than critics," Gen. Allaga stated.

In a separate interview, Joint Special Operations Task Force-Philippines commander Col. William Coultrup said, "During the next couple of weeks, the people of Zamboanga will notice more US military cargo aircraft flying in and out of the airport in Zamboanga City."

"This is the end of the short-term deployment for some of the US military that have been here in Mindanao assisting the AFP," he added.

The Western Mindanao Command yesterday issued a general statement stating that, "In the course of the standard rotation of temporarily deployed US military personnel, a number of US troops in the southern Philippines will be changing over. This normal rotation is necessary due to the temporary nature of the US military presence in the Southern Philippines.

During this time, there will be an increase in the number of US aircraft flying in and out of the airport in Zamboanga City. This rotation will not affect the overall number of US troops in the Philippines. The troops arriving in the Philippines will replace the same number of troops returning to their home bases."

"There will be other troops coming in to start their temporary stay here at the request of the Government of the Philippines in order to support new projects that we have jointly planned with WestMinCom," Coultrup, a US Army colonel, said.

US TROOPS MERELY REPLACED

In a separate interview at the WesMinCom Headquarters, WesMinCom deputy spokesman Captain Rommel Miguel elaborated that "the rotation policy of the US military is always done every six months."

Some of the American soldiers will be arriving on board a C-17, others on the C-130 along with some of the equipment that the Philippine Armed Forces have requested to facilitate the infrastructure and engineering projects that are projected to be done as part of the two military allies' joint support for education in southern Philippines. Other soldiers will also be coming in on board commercial flights, he said.

"We are going through our normal troop rotation, so from now until October 3, there will be US military cargo aircraft coming and going," added JSOTFP Public Affairs Officer Maj. Kenneth Hoffman who is himself leaving the Philippines as he too will be replaced.

"Some of the US troops will be leaving and their equipment will also be getting out, so they will be replaced by the same number of troops and equipment relieving them," said WesMinCom deputy spokesman Captain Rommel Miguel.

The US military has been providing support to the Philippine Armed Forces for decades now. Such alliance was established under the Mutual Defense Treaty of 1951, and affirmed by the Visiting Forces Agreement.

The US has similar support with some other Asian nations, and has also manifested alliance in providing regional support to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), especially following the ASEAN Convention on Terrorism.

"I am grateful for all the support and help that Lt. Gen. (Nelson) Allaga and the AFP have provided to the US military. Our troops look forward to working with and learning from the AFP in the future," JSOTFP commander Col. Coultrup concluded. (Frencie L. Carreon)

The Bush administration is using the election as a cover, as it increases threats against Iran. It has quietly assembled the largest naval armada in one place since World War II - in the Persian Gulf, with guns aimed at Iran.

They have now deployed 18 NATO ships to the Black Sea and raised threats against Russia, while opening a new front of bombing attacks. Meanwhile, no troops have been withdrawn from the disastrous wars in Iraq & Afghanistan.

There are always billions of dollars for war and billions more to bail out the big banks and mortgage companies, but no assistance for the 600,000 working people laid off this year, or the 2 million small homeowners being foreclosed in record numbers, or the more the 50 million people without health care.

We need money for jobs and housing - not for another war!

While the situation is growing dire for many, Washington's cutbacks in domestic programs continue. The fiscal year beginning on October 1 will bring drastic cuts. A new U.S. war will bring only more suffering here as well as massive destruction abroad.

The recent Hurricane Gustav highlighted the failure of Washington to do anything to rebuild the Gulf Coast in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Three years after the disaster, thousands of people are still homeless, as the money that could have been spent on meeting human needs has gone to fund the Pentagon and the agenda of endless war. Every social program and every aspect of the economy has been impacted by the billions of dollars wasted on war.

We must take action now! Here are some ways you can help:

Organize a local September 27 action to Stop War On Iran, whether it is a march or rally, speak-out, picket line, walk-out, or teach-in--in cities large or small. What you do can make a difference. List your action at

Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran:
Who Pays? Who Profits?

  • Almost 4,200 U.S. soldiers have died in Iraq, and nearly 900 in Afghanistan. No one on the Board of Directors of Halliburton, Exxon or Morgan Stanley has lost a daughter or son in these wars, because the troops are drawn from working class families and disproportionately from communities of color. The Pentagon takes advantage of the lack of educational and employment opportunities to target these communities with false promises of college money and job training.
  • Many vets returning from Iraq & Afghanistan are suffering from physical and psychological injuries, only to find that veterans' hospitals are being shut down, programs are being cut, and facilities are filthy, under-equipped and understaffed.
  • According to CostofWar.com, the Iraq war has cost more than $550 billion. This money has been stolen robbed from working people. We need this money for schools, job training, health care, repairing our crumbling infrastructure, rebuilding the Gulf Coast, and much more.
  • While oil companies are making record profits, the price of gas, heating oil, groceries, and other necessities is skyrocketing.
  • Meanwhile, the foreclosures and evictions crisis is growing. Washington is spending billions on war and on bailing out banks, while working people are being thrown out of their homes.
  • Especially during difficult economic times, Wall Street and the corporate media work overtime to divide us. They want us to blame the people of Iraq or Iran or immigrant workers for the crisis, instead of uniting against the corporations who profit while working people bleed. Now, more than ever, we need to stand in solidarity against racism, sexism, anti-LGBT bigotry, and anything else they use to attempt to divide us.
